Having a pre programmed scientific calculator will prove essential. Used to aid coordinating distances, bearings and working out complex calculations on the go, there are few that would not recommend this to anyone looking at jobs for a civil engineer.
An Electronic Distance Measurement device, (EDM), is another essential piece of kit. Modern surveying would not be where it is without this electronic gadgetry. Able to calculate bearings from two points quickly and effectively, it smoothes the process and works in the most testing of environments.
Ensuring that pipes are laid in the right place, at the right level and at the right alignment can not only speed the construction process up, but can also save on operational costs. A Pipe Laser is used for this; measuring the distance for both laying the equipment, and helping with grading the equipment necessary to be used.
The Automatic Level and Laser Level is possibly the most often seen tool in the public eye. Used to determine accurate levels on a work site, it relies on manual line of site, lasers and a staff or pointer to mark necessary positions.
Though skills are learned to use and work with these tools, it is important to remember that the human brain is the most important tool. Other than this, being physically fit and having a strong work ethic are also fundamental to making a success of a job in civil engineering.
