There is no shortage of Universities or Business schools in London which are able to provide postgraduate business courses which include Doctor in Business Administration (DBA) or a Business Ph D.
Qualifications required for starting a Business Ph D course would typically be an Upper Second Class first degree or Masters in any relevant subject whilst for the DBA an MBA qualification would be necessary.
The choice of University or Business School will depend on a variety of factors including cost, extent of international needs, length of course and the method of study to fit in with company or personal plans. Obviously the better-known establishments with a top reputation will be much sought after but other Business Schools may provide opportunities to study in areas of particular interest or relevance to the student.
Courses vary in length and intensity but always require significant commitment to reflect the level and value of the qualification. A part time DBA course could require between four and eight years, with monthly weekend attendance initially and private work besides. As the course progresses the proportion of attendance decreases to allow the writing of a 50,000 thesis and preparation of a portfolio. A full time Business Ph D programme at a top school could take four years of study and with the production of a thesis shortly afterwards.
As can be expected, the doctoral programmes in London’s world class business schools and universities are rigorous and will include training in research design, techniques and methods, analysis of data (both quantitive and qualitative) and reporting of the data in a comprehensive and digestible format. Full ability in various software to allow this analysis and reporting will be necessary.
To the above will be added courses and workshops in such topics as organisational theory, management and economic models, and various skills development.
